Q: Can I change the content of the code once it's been printed?

A: Absolutely, this is one of the key benefits of QRky QR codes. The code links to your profile on QRky - and you can change that profile whenever you like, whether it’s to tailor to a specific client, networking event, or just to keep it fresh.

Q: Is my QR code registered anywhere like normal 1D barcodes are?

1D barcodes hold around 12 characters of data and therefore need to be registered to ensure the same barcodes don’t hold the same data. QR codes hold over 7000 characters, and thus you don’t need to worry. By registering the content where the code points to (typically a URL, in this case a QRky account), you do not need to register QR codes anywhere.

Q: What happens if I don’t renew my account after my first year?

It’s not the end of the world! You will lose access to your control panel and widgets, but the QRky codes will still work, and won’t stop doing so. Rather than cancelling, think of it as a pause in the service – customisation is unavailable, but your details are retained, and so if you decide to renew at a later date, you can pick up where you left off. Just give us a call, and we will walk you through the reactivation.

Q: How do I print this QR code?

You can ask your printer to print this (see our list of print partners here) or you can add it to your artwork yourself. Either way, save the QR code image to your computer and then import it into your artwork or send it to your printer. When you save the image it saves a high quality vector file, which will print as large as you like without warping.

Q: What do I need to be aware of when I print the QR code?

If printing the code onto a dark background you will need to ensure you leave a white/light border around the code that is 3* the thickness of one of the black little squares that makes up the code. Make sure you don’t warp the code.

Q: How big is it?

Our QR codes are optimised to print as a 14mm*14mm square, so that’s the standard size we supply. When scanning a code, phone cameras need to focus on the code, so we recommend this as a good size. You can change the size, but the smaller you print the codes the harder it is to scan so we don’t recommend you go any smaller than 13mm*13mm. Please note that these instructions are correct for QRky QR codes but other QR codes will probably need to be printed larger than this.

Q: I've seen fancy coloured QR codes, can I make my QR codes coloured?

Of course – changing the colour can allow for a very quirky QR code! However, you need to be aware that QR code readers work on contrast between the dots and the background, so in order to keep the codes compatible with all readers, the code needs to be darker than the background. You can change the background colour to any light colour and the code to any dark colour, but ensure you leave enough contrast between them. If you're unsure, simply try scanning the code to test it. When changing the colours of a QR code we always recommend you test it on a few different phones before printing.

Q: I want a picture in it, like I saw on another code!

Around 30% of a QR code is typically “error correction” - the centre of the code is usually reserved for this. This error correction is not required for phone scanners to scan the QR codes so you can replace this space with anything you like, and some people decide to add images. However, there is no sure-fire way to do this without affecting the functionality, so you’ll need to try this out with trial and error. When testing this, we strongly recommend you test scanning the code with a large range of phones before printing, as codes are often made unreadable through this process. You don’t want to waste a good networking event because of an unreadable code!
